Over a career that stretched across television, film, animation, and public service, he became known not only for memorable performances but also for speaking openly about causes he believed deserved attention.

His passing was remembered by SAG-AFTRA, the union representing performers, which highlighted his years of involvement with the organization. He had served as president of the former Screen Actors Guild, remained a member of the SAG-AFTRA National Board, and had received the SAG Life Achievement Award for his long contribution to the profession.

The union also emphasized that his work outside entertainment was an important part of his legacy. SAG-AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris said he was unusual among actors of his standing because he was willing to put his reputation behind social causes.

According to the statement, his advocacy extended beyond the concerns of fellow performers. He spoke out on issues involving poverty, violence, war, and legal and social injustice, both in America and internationally. His career therefore became connected not only with acting but also with years of public involvement.

For television audiences, one of his defining achievements came through the character of Lou Grant.
