Andy “Caveman” Davis built the Armington, Illinois, home in 1977 with a practical ambition: use the surrounding earth to help control indoor temperatures and reduce energy costs. The approximately 2,300-square-foot property became deeply personal, too. Rocks gathered during family trips to Colorado were incorporated into its interiors, giving the rooms a distinctive, cave-like character. Round windows, curved passageways, and a stone-surrounded bathtub make the house feel unlike a conventional residence, while its concrete exterior and earth-covered roof reflect Davis’s original purpose.
