From Classic Sitcoms To Generations Of Viewers
Williams became especially familiar to television audiences through his appearances on Sanford and Son, where he played Officer “Smitty” Smith. He later continued the role on Sanford, becoming part of the memorable ensemble surrounding the classic comedy.
Another defining chapter arrived with 227. Williams portrayed Lester Jenkins, husband of Mary Jenkins, played by Marla Gibbs. His performance gave the family storyline an everyday quality that helped audiences connect with the characters beyond the jokes and situations of each episode.
His career extended far beyond those two shows. Williams also appeared in projects such as The Waltons, Private Benjamin, Good Times, Night Court, Moesha, Parks and Recreation, and the newer Matlock series.
